Scientific name : Incilius alvarius

Family : Bufonidae

Native to : Sonoran desert of California and Arizona

Interesting fact : The white wart at the corner of the mouth and those on the legs produce toxins that can paralyze predators.

Conservation status : Least Concern

The largest native toad in the United States thrives in both desert and semi-arid areas. The ear drum is a prominent green circular patch behind the eyes. They live in rodents’ burrows to escape winter and start breeding during the rainy season. Children should not handle these toads as they secrete toxin off their skins.
