The canary rockfish is a brilliant orange-red fish living in rocky bottoms. Juveniles, however, enjoy shallow waters near rocky reefs and piers. Average length is 76 cm and they weigh up to 4 kg. Adults feed on demersal invertebrates and small fish, while juveniles feed on krill larvae, copepods and amphipods. It matures at about 5-6 years of age.
