California buttercup is a flowering perennial. It grows up to 3 feet tall. The numerous stems sprawl to erect 15 to 50 cm long. The stems generally have several shiny, lemon-yellow flowers in an open inflorescence. The flowers have up to 16 petals. The seeds of California buttercup are usually ground into a powder and used to flavour soups, or mixed with cereals while making bread etc. However, livestock grazing on this plant suffer from paralysis.
