The Eurylaimidae (scientific name) or broadbills are found from Eastern Himalayas to Indonesia and the Philippines, with the exception of two species which are native to Sub-Saharan regions of Africa. 5-11 inches in height, these birds have brightly coloured plumage, large eyes and heads, and broad flat beaks. They are insectivorous and carnivorous. Their diet ranges from insects and lizards to tree frogs. However, two species of broadbills eat only fruits. The nests are pear-shaped. An average clutch-size may vary depending on the altitude, from 4-8 eggs in higher altitude regions to 1-3 eggs in the African continent. The incubation period lasts for 17-18 days. Due to the loss of habitat, their IUCN listing is NEAR THREATENED for 3 species and VULNERABLE for 3 other species.
