They live near watering holes and vegetation and graze on reed shoots, a diet rich in protein and low in fibre-content. The female gives birth every nine to fourteen months. Their population has seen a decline due to shrinking habitat and exploitation of the environment by humans which has caused droughts; floodplains have almost disappeared due to dams, agriculture and settlements.
