Belinda’s Locket

Belinda looked after a flock of geese for Mrs Bundy, the old woman who lived in a cottage at the edge of a dense forest.
One day, Prince William and his attendants, going to hunt, saw the pretty girl and wondered who she was. He stopped for a drink of water. The Prince soon began to come more often to the cottage, for he had fallen in love with Belinda. One day, he found Mrs Bundy alone in the cottage.
“She’s gone to fetch some firewood,” explained the old woman. “Does she like any young man, Mrs Bundy?” asked the Prince Mrs Bundy smiled as she said, “There are no young men who come here, sir, except you.”
“Do you think she would marry me if I asked her?”
“You will have to ask her, won’t you?” Mrs Bundy added, “I must tell you something before you speak to her. She is not my daughter. I found her on my doorstep years ago. Will you want to marry her still, sir?”
Prince William nodded and said, “I will.”
Mrs Bundy brought a little packet and held it out to him, saying, “She was wearing this when I found her.”
Inside was a locket set with a ruby and diamonds. The Prince looked at it in astonishment. “This belongs to the lost princess of Kendrick. I have seen a picture of her mother wearing this! Belinda must be the same princess!” he exclaimed.
The next day, a huge cavalcade arrived at the little cottage, with the Queen of Kendrick too in a carriage. Belinda, who had no idea what was going on, looked bewildered. But when Mrs Bundy and the Prince explained everything, she realised she would have to go away.

Belinda refused to leave Mrs Bundy. But the Queen requested the old woman to come with her too. They all went to the palace, where Belinda married the Prince and they lived happily thereafter.
