Bee Hummingbird

The Mellisuga Helenae (scientific name) or bee hummingbird is found only in the forests which are on the main island of Cuba. Only 2.0-2.4 inches in length, this bird is the smallest living bird in the world. The male bee hummingbird has very colourful plumage. The head and throat have red-pink feathers, which are elongated at the neck. Upperparts are bluish-green and the underside is white. The wing tips have blue spots and the tail is black- tipped. Its diet consists mostly of nectar, but it is also known to eat small insects. An average clutch of the bee hummingbird has 2 very tiny eggs (6 mm in length), which are incubated for 22 days. Its IUCN listing is NEAR THREATENED.
