Bearded Barbet

The Lybius dubius (scientific name) or bearded barbet is commonly found in the tropical parts of West Africa. 10 inches in length, this bird has a short neck, large head and plump body. The head, back, upper chest and wing are all glossy black. The area below the eyes, chin, throat and belly are all red. The bill is thick and yellow and is surrounded by well-developed bristles mostly at the base of the beak, giving it a bearded appearance. The area around the eyes is bare and pale. Its diet is comprised of fruits, especially figs. The younger birds, however, do eat insects as well. An average clutch-size has 2 eggs which are incubated for approximately 16 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
