The Rupicola peruvianus (scientific name) or Andean cock-of-the-rock is endemic to the Andean cloud forests of South America. 13 inches in length, this medium-sized bird displays sexual dimorphism. While the female is dull brown, the male has a disc-like crest right above its beak, which many times hides the beak completely. The overall plumage is scarlet or bright orange in colour. Only the tail and wings are black. Only the scapulars are pale grey colour. Its diet is comprised mostly of fruits and insects, but it is also known to eat small reptiles and frogs. They are polygamous breeders with an average clutch-size of 2 eggs which are incubated by the female for 25-25 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
