An Umbrella for a Princess

Whenever it rained, Princess Caroline had to stay indoors. She had to do needlework and read books and learn all about nouns and verbs. It was terribly boring. One day, Caroline threw a tantrum and the Queen came running to find out why the Princess was lying on the carpet and screaming! “She wants to go out, Your Majesty!” explained the governess, Miss Mildew, and Nurse Greta and the maids, “But it’s raining!” The Princess’ screams, meanwhile, were getting louder. “Call the coach!” ordered the Queen, “Take her out!”
The screams stopped. Princess Caroline smiled sweetly at everyone and went off to get ready. The coach was brought to the door and she climbed in with Miss Mildew. They went round the palace parks and drove through the orchard and the countryside. Princess Caroline came back looking very cheerful.
The rain continued for a few days, so the outing in the coach became a regular habit. One day, Princess Caroline returned looking sulky and angry.
“What happened, my dear?” asked the Queen. “Miss Mildew!” retorted the Princess, “She spent the time reading to me in the carriage. If you send her with me again, I will have a fit!”
It became clear to the Queen that the Princess wanted a little time away from the governess and all the restrictions of the palace. That day, she got a beautiful umbrella for the Princess: it was blue with little white flowers on it.

“Now, you can go out in the rains and enjoy yourself! But do take care not to get lost or to fall sick!” advised the wise Queen. Princess Caroline was delighted. Now, she could study on sunny days and go for a walk in the palace gardens when it was rainy!
