American White Pelican

The Pelecanus erythrorhynchos (scientific name) or American white pelican is a migratory aquatic bird, which breeds in North America, but migrates South to Central and South America in winters. 50-70 inches in length, this bird has pure silver-white plumage overall, excepting the lower wing feathers, which are grey-black and visible in flight. The beak, bare patch around the eyes and feet are yellow. The beak is huge and flat at the top, and has a throat sac below. Their diet is comprised of a variety of fishes, which they catch while swimming. On occasion they are known to steal food from other birds. An average clutch-size has 2-3 eggs which are incubated by both parents for 4 weeks. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
