Alexander Vasilyevich Kolchak was born on 16th November 1874 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and he died on 7th February 1920 (aged 46 years) in Irkutsk, Soviet Russia. A commander in the Imperial Russian Navy and Polar explorer, Alexander helped design two special ice breakers to be launched for a cartographic expedition. He commanded one of these vessels during these expeditions and collected material for research. He received the highest award of the Russian Geographical Society for his exploration and he came to be known as ‘Kolchak the Polar’.
