After the death of Kumbhakarna, the responsibility of Lanka’s safety fell on the shoulders of Indrajeet. Indrajeet was performing a sacrifice that would make him unconquerable. But the monkeys came to know of it and interrupted it leading to its failure. Enraged, Indrajeet returned to the battlefield to finish Lakshmana who was waiting for him. The two warriors were equally matched.
That day’s battle was decisive. Both were known for their prowess. It was crystal-clear that one of them would be alive to see the rising sun next day. It was to be seen who the stronger of the two was. The battle was on. Both were blood-thirsty. The battle continued for a long time.

Finding an opportunity Lakshmana used the indrastra against Indrajeet who was beheaded. Indrajeet’s death was a severe blow to Ravana. Maddened with rage, Ravana unsheathed his sword. He would have rushed off immediately to kill Seeta, had he not been stopped by Suparshva, a wise army general, who advised him that he would incur the shame of killing a woman. Ravana changed his mind. All his major warriors were dead by then.
