Common zinnias are bushy, leafy annual plants. They have hairy, branching stems. The leaves of zinnia are arranged opposite to one another and they often clasp the stem. The solitary flower heads are borne at the ends of branches, growing at the junction of a leaflike structure and the receptacle. The flowers occur in a wide range of colours. The colours of the flower range from white and cream to pink, red, and purple, to green, yellow, apricot, orange, salmon and bronze. They make excellent fresh cut flowers.
