The X-ray tetra has faint gold scales on a translucent layer of skin,allowing its backbone to be clearly seen. It returns to floodlands to spawn during rainy season, laying 300-400 eggs scattered amongst the vegetation. Fries hatch 24 hours later. It feeds on aquatic plants, worms, insects, small crustaceans and insects’ larvae. Lifespan is 3-4 years.
