Why doesn’t our stomach get digested?

The lining of epithelial cells in our stomach protects the stomach from digesting itself along with foods. These cells produce a white, slimy liquid called the ‘mucus’, which forms a barrier between the lining of the stomach and the food contents. The mucus protects our stomach from getting digested by the strong gastric juices and acid produced during the digestion process.
