Why does our skin become wrinkly after swimming?

Unseen to the human eye, the skin of our hands and feet is covered with special oils that lubricate and protect our skin making it waterproof. When we soak the skin of our hands and feet for a longer duration, the oil gets washed away and water starts getting absorbed in the skin’s outer layers. With more dead skin on these parts of our body, the water is absorbed like a sponge. This is just like osmosis where water travels from one thing to another, especially to the place where there is less water. That is why skin shrivels.
