The Ashanti is an ethnic group of the Akans in Ghana. It is a new nation which is more than 50 years old. The Ashanti people live in central Ghana in western Africa, 300 kilometres. away from the coast. Ghana, which was previously the Gold Coast, was a British colony until 1957. Ashanti is in the centre and Kumasi is its capital. The Ashanti traditional houses of Ghana are protected by UNESCO. Only a few of the structures remain today.
