Watering the Garden

Once, a large troop of monkeys lived in the garden of a king. New Year was approaching and the royal gardener wanted to join the three-day celebrations. So, he requested the monkey-king to take over his duty of watering the trees and the plants. The next day, the monkeys filled up the buckets and began watering the trees and the plants. Suddenly, the monkey-king stopped everyone and said, “Why waste so much water? Pull up the roots of each tree and check how long the roots are. Give more water only to the ones with long roots.” The monkeys followed their king’s order immediately. A monk was passing by the garden. He saw the monkeys uprooting the trees and the plants and asked, “What are you doing?” When he heard their reply, he said, “Your foolishness has turned a good deed into a disaster.”

Moral: Fools can make even good deeds turn bad.
