Water lettuce is a free-floating, frost-tender aquatic perennial. It produces rosettes of wedge-shaped, overlapping, fluted, velvety, soft green leaves. The leaves are covered with waterrepellant hair. The plant resembles the small open heads of lettuce. It is considered to be a noxious weed in many tropical and sub-tropical areas where it can quickly cover a pond or lake from shore to shore. Yellowish-green to creamy white flowers are generally inconspicuous. Feathery roots dangle downward from the plant, providing a shelter for many small fish. It is also sometimes commonly called shell flower. It is commonly used as an ornamental plant in water gardens.
