Water from Wax (Super Science Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Candle
  2. Glass (taller than the
    candle)
  3. Matchstick
  4. Non-flammable surface

Convert some wax into water with this experiment.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Ask an adult to help you place a candle on a non-flammable surface and light it.
  2. Next, ask him to place a glass gently over the burning candle upside down.
  3. Wait for a while; the flame will gradually extinguish. Have a look at the glass.

RESULT

Wax is mainly comprised of carbon atoms and hydrogen. As the wax begins to burn, the hydrogen reacts with the oxygen in the air, creating water. And the carbon atoms react with the air to create carbon dioxide. By placing a glass upside down over the burning candle, the water which is being created condenses on the cool glass creating water droplets. Gradually as all the oxygen inside the glass is used up, the flame will not be able to react with any more oxygen, and thus goes out.
