One day, Akbar’s courtiers were discussing about God. Birbal said, “Whatever God does is for the ultimate good of everyone.” A courtier asked, “I lost my toe in an accident. How is it good for me?” Birbal said, “Only God knows His ways. Time will prove that I am right.” A few days later, Akbar and his courtiers went hunting. The courtier who had lost his toe wandered deep into the forest. Suddenly, some tribesmen caught him and took him to their chief. The chief said, “Tie him up. Let’s sacrifice him to our deity.” Just then, one of them noticed that the courtier’s toe was missing. The chief said, “Release him! We cannot sacrifice him.” Tired and hungry, he was searching for a way out of the forest when he reunited with Akbar and his courtiers. When he told them what had happened, they admired Birbal for his faith in God.
