Thunderstorm

Without the aid of anyone or anything, how is it possible to tell how far away a thunderstorm is, from where you stand?

Answer
Light travels at 1,86,000 miles per second and sound travels about one mile every five seconds. Since thunder is the product of lightning, when you see lightning you should begin to count until you hear the thunder. In this way, you are able to tell how far thunder has travelled. Example: If you see lightning and are able to count to ten before you hear thunder, you know that the storm is about two miles away.
