Thomas Coulter was born in 1793 in Dundalk, Ireland and he died in 1843 (aged 50 years) in Dundalk, Ireland. Thomas was a botanist, physician and explorer who is remembered for his exploration and botanical research in Mexico, Arizona and California. The details and travels of his life are known only through fragmented records. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy and was a renowned scholar of botany. Thomas was a physician with the Real Del Monte company in Mexico and it is during this time that he collected and studied the flora of this region. He studied botany in Geneva for seventeen months under Swiss taxonomist Augustin de Candolle.
