The Wolf and the Dog

The Wolf and the Dog

Once, a wolf named Justy had become pale and drawn, and was dying with hunger. Then he sent a message to his entire relatives about his bad health. All his relatives arrived there to see him. A dog, who was the cousin of Justy, had also arrived to ask after his health. When the dog asked the reason of his debility, Justy replied that he had become so old that he couldn’t hunt the animal for himself. Hearing this the dog said, “I can easily arrange that for you.” The dog took him to his master.

So the wolf and the dog went towards the town together. On the way the wolf noticed that the hair on the dog’s neck was very much worn away, so he asked him how that had come about. “Oh, it is nothing,” said the dog, “That is only the place where the collar is put on at night to keep me chained up; it chafes a bit.” Hearing this Justy came to know that the dog remained like a prisoner. He went from there saying, “Goodbye to you, master dog. I like to live free rather than a prisoner.”
