Once, two brothers, Ron and Ben, lived with their parents in a little house in a small town. Ron was eight, while his brother Ben was three years younger than he. One day, their father felt that they needed a bigger house to live in. So he decided to renovate it. While the house was being renovated, the family moved to another house in a different neighbourhood for a few months. The new house did not have a garden, so the boys did not have a nice place to play. Seeing their bored faces, their mother suggested that they could go and play near the lake which was close by. “It’s a nice place. I am sure you will like it.” So, the boys went to play near the lake. They liked it very much. Thereafter, every day after school, they would visit the lake to play.
The Face at the Window
The boys really enjoyed playing near the lake. The first month at the new place went off well without any incident. However, soon, Ron noticed that every time they passed by the empty house on the end of the road, his little brother Ben would become upset. He would run away and Ron would have to run to keep up with him. So, one day Ron decided to ask him what made him so upset. Ben pointed to a window in the house and said, “I saw a scary person staring at me from the window. Once he even waved at me. So, I got scared.” Puzzled, Ron looked up at the window immediately. However, he did not see anyone. Just then, he noticed something else. All the plants outside the window were swaying and quivering by themselves. It was a muggy day and there was absolutely no wind!
Father Sees it too
Ron told his brother that there was nothing to be scared about it. “It’s probably your imagination. It’s better to ignore that house,” said Ron. The two brothers then continued towards the lake and avoided looking at the empty house. That night, their father came in very late at 2 am. The next morning, when the boys were having breakfast, their father said, “Last night, I saw a man at the window of the empty house. Also, there was a foul odour emitting from that place.” Hearing this, Ben said, “Father, I have also seen an ugly and terrible man on the window. He is very scary.” The boys’ parents were shocked. Their mother said, “Son, you should have told us about it sooner!” The family then decided to enquire from the neighbours. The neighbours had no idea about the house, but agreed there was something strange going on.
The Mystery is Revealed
Determined to know more about the matter, Ron’s father decided to consult a holy man. The holy man had had many experiences before with ghosts, so he was not scared. He asked the family and the neighbours to stand outside the house, while he went in. He went into the empty house muttering some prayers. The family then saw him sprinkle some holy water all around the house. Soon he came out with a smile. “I have spoken to the spirit which lives in this house. He lived here alone many years ago, but unfortunately died of an illness. Nobody found his body and it rotted here. He has promised he won’t trouble anyone, but won’t leave the house,” said the holy man. The family heaved a sigh of relief and went home. Nobody ever saw the face again. Soon, Ron and Ben moved back into their renovated home and forgot all about the face at the window.
