The Spider and the Honey

A little girl who lived in the village far, far away always brought the most delicious fruits to sell : bananas, plums, oranges. But no one dared to ask her where she got them, because they knew what had happened to the spider!
The spider was extremely lazy and greedy. He loved to eat and was particularly fond of honey. He pestered the little girl to share her secret. One day, the girl decided to teach him a lesson.
“Will you promise to keep my secret, if I tell you?” she asked.
The spider promised. She took him to places where no one had gone earlier. When they came to a plum tree, the girl told him, “This tree has the sweetest plums.”
The spider started right away, shoving the girl aside. He didn’t share a single plum with her, nor did he say ‘thank you’.
When he had eaten every plum on the tree, he looked at her with a wide smile. The girl asked, “Would you like to eat some bananas?”

The spider’s mouth watered as he said, “Oh, yes!” and he followed her. He thought, ‘What a foolish girl she is showing me all her secrets! I will feast on them every day!’
When they came to the banana tree, he again rushed past her to stuff himself with all the bananas! Not even a single one did he give the little girl. The girl smiled and asked, “Do you still want honey now?”
“Yes! Yes!” said the greedy spider. She took him deep into the bush and pointed out a tree with a hollow in it.
“In that hollow is the most delicious honey,” she said.
The spider raced into the hollow and ate till the last drop of honey was finished. Then he tried to get out. But his stomach had become so large that he was stuck! He simply couldn’t get out.

“Help!” he shouted, “Please call someone to get me out!” “You wouldn’t be stuck if you weren’t so greedy and selfish,” said the girl.
“I’m sorry! Please get me out!” he pleaded. “You’re only sorry that you’re stuck…not because you’ve been greedy and selfish!” replied the girl, “But I’ll see if I can get help!”
She called softly, but she knew her voice was too far to be heard by anyone. She left the spider and went off to collect some oranges.
