The Shark-baby

The swans delivered all the new babies to their parents in the world. The elephant cubs were given to elephant mom and dad, the human babies to humans, the tiger cubs to tiger-parents, the dove babies to dove-parents and so forth. The clouds made the new babies and gave them to the swans. The clouds also had to tell the swans to take the babies to the correct parents. It was very important that they remembered which baby went to which parent; otherwise mistakes could lead to trouble! After that, it was the swans’ job to take the babies and leave them at the door of the parents. Both the swans and the clouds had important jobs; they had to be very careful. However, they made a mistake once. They gave a shark-baby to the dove-parents. The dove-parents named him, Sam, and loved him like their own child.

Sam had a little sister, Kelley. He loved his family and would do anything to keep them safe and happy. One day, Mr Vulture, the deadliest of all birds, was passing by when he saw Kelley. He was hungry and decided that Kelley would make a good meal. Just as he was about to grab her, Sam came in the middle. “Run, Kelley!” he yelled, “Run like the wind and go to mom and dad!” A hungry Mr Vulture was not happy that his meal had decided to make a dash. He grabbed Sam instead. But Sam was a clever kid. He had never shown his sharp teeth to any member of his family. As soon as Mr Vulture put him in his mouth, Sam opened his jaw wide and grabbed on to Mr Vulture’s throat with his teeth. He decided to get stuck in the middle of the throat. However hard Mr Vulture tried to swallow or spit, Sam kept holding on with his sharp teeth. ‘You will not get me!’ Sam thought angrily. He kicked hard and broke a lot of Mr Vulture’s teeth. Hurt and exhausted, Mr Vulture finally fell down with his mouth open. Sam quickly let go and crawled out of his mouth. Scared, Mr Vulture ran far away and never came back. Sam’s heroism saved the entire bird community from the evil Mr Vulture.
