The mongoose came out of its burrow the next day and saw the meat lying on the ground. He was tempted, but he was a cautious fellow. He wondered if this was some kind of a trap set by a hunter perhaps. So, he watched from inside his hollow. In a day or two, he realised there was no hunter around. So, he felt confident. ‘Some flying birds must have dropped it here,’ he thought. He went out and ate one piece, and then another and another… . Following the trail, he reached the hollow in which the snake lived. They are natural enemies. The mongoose attacked the snake and soon killed it. The cranes were very happy. But they had not realised the danger from the mongoose. It heard the nestlings chirping in the tree. So, it climbed up the tree and ate them up!
