The Obedient Servant

The-Obedient-Servant

One day, the king filled the bags of gold coins and gems to distribute among the poor and the Brahmins, and asked Tenali to follow him.

He said he should see if anything fell out. On the way the bag tore open and the gems started falling but Tenali didn’t complain, since he was asked to see, not to tell about it. Later, the king stopped to bathe in the sea and started chanting ‘Hare Rama’. In Kannada, Hare means ‘to tear’. So, Tenali tore off all the king’s clothes.

On being asked he replied that he was following the king’s orders just like he did for the falling gems. This made the king realize that he kept wasting his wealth uselessly and needed to keep a check on it.

He felt sorry for what he did. He again praised Tenali for his good deed. Once again Tenali had made the king realize his importance.
