The Music Lesson

Mr Van Pelt taught music to Princess Victoria. He looked depressed because she did not know anything about music! She thumped on the piano like a rabbit jumping on it and her singing was like the wailing of cats! “Madam,” said Mr Van Pelt to the queen, “I think it will be better to instruct the princess in some other art.” “What do you mean, Mr Van Pelt?” asked the queen, looking quite angry. “Look at the birds, madam,” said the music teacher, “The tailorbird makes its nest in a different way from the weaver bird. Now if you tell them to make each other’s nest, they cannot do it!” The queen thought over the matter with a cool mind and asked, “What else do you think she can do?” “Why not ask her what she likes,” suggested Mr Van Pelt, “It may be painting or languages or pottery.” And they found that Princess Victoria was a wonderful painter!
