The Mouse who wanted to be a Butterfly

Bertie was a small mouse who lived in a field of corn. He would collect corn in the morning and bring it home. On the way, he had a wonderful time playing in the field and looking at all the wonderful things on the way.
One day, Bertie saw a beautiful butterfly and chased it across the field.
‘What fun it must be to flutter all over the place!’ thought Bertie, ‘And such lovely colours! I wish I had such lovely wings!’
Bertie went home and looked into his mirror and tried to imagine how he’d look like with wings. That night he even dreamt of it!
A few days later, he met an old friend in the field. It was Nugget, the squirrel. Nugget was trying to carry a large acorn across the field and stopped to chat.
“Hello, Bertie!” said Nugget, “What’s the matter?”

“Nothing,” said Bartie.
“There must be something to make you look so miserable!” said Nugget.
“Oh, well, I saw a butterfly yesterday,” replied Bertie.
“What’s unhappy about that?” asked Nugget.
“She had beautiful wings and can fly!” said Bertie, bursting into tears, “I wish I too had wings and could fly!” Nugget looked at him, quite stunned.
“You are the silliest mouse I have ever seen!” said Nugget.
“What do you mean?” said Bertie, looking very cross.
“A butterfly has such a short life,” said Nugget, “Besides, it can’t eat corn. It can only drink what it gets from flowers. And do you know what some of these humans do?”
“What?” asked Bertie, his tears now drying on his short whiskers.

“They catch butterflies,” whispered Nugget, “and they pin it on a piece of paper to show off its colours! Can you imagine anyone doing something so awful to you?”
“Oh, dear! I didn’t know that!” said Bertie, “I think I’ll just go on being a mouse!”
“Bye, bye, Bertie,” Nugget said, smiling affectionately as Bertie scuttled off home. “It’s better to be happy than to be anything else!”
