Once, a hunter gifted a beautiful parrot to the king which he and his queen kept in their private chamber.
They fed him best sweets and nuts, and taught him some holy chants as well. Once when Tenali came to visit them, the queen boasted of the parrot’s holy chants to which Tenali said that the parrot was merely on training and was not full of devotion and he could prove that. For this, he brought a cat with him seeing which the parrot felt nervous and started screeching. Even after the repeated attempts of the queen to make him sing the holy chants he did not speak the words he was taught.
The king and the queen realized the parrot was not devoted and set him free. They thanked Tenali for his wit and wisdom. The king gave him a gold ring whereas the queen gave him a necklace. Tenali once again had proved his importance and value in the eyes of the king.
