The Green Wood Gatherer

Once, 500 followers of a monk went to the forest to gather firewood. One of them was full of kosajja or laziness. He saw a tree that had no leaves. Thinking it to be a dead tree, he decided to rest first. Soon, he fell asleep. The others gathered the wood and woke up the snoring follower. He hurriedly climbed up the tree and began cutting down the branches that were actually still green. The lazy follower then threw his bundle on top of the pile. The next day, the same 500 followers had to go for a religious ceremony. To prepare an early breakfast, the cook picked up the top bundle of green wood. Since the wood wouldn’t burn, he couldn’t prepare any food. It was too late to go to the village. The monk, who came to know of the story of the lazy follower, said, “A lazy fool causes trouble for everyone.”

Moral: Do your work with sincerity and not laziness.
