The Fawn who Played Dead

Once, a fawn joined a school to learn tricks in order to survive in the forest. One day, he was caught in a trap. The teacher said to the crying mother of the fawn, “While the others played, your son listened to my lessons attentively. He has ‘Chitta’ which is conscious mind. He will surely find a way out to escape to safety.” Meanwhile, the fawn lay trapped in the hunter’s net and thought, ‘I will use the playing-dead trick.’ So, he acted as if he had died. He dug out grass with his hooves showing he had struggled. He turned up his eyes and hung out his tongue. When the hunter saw the fawn’s motionless body, he believed that the fawn had died. As he removed the trap to take the ‘dead’ fawn to the butcher, the nimble fawn sprinted off into the forest.

Moral: Lessons learnt with sincerity never go waste.
