The Farmer and the Soldier

Once, a farmer and a soldier became friends. The soldier asked the farmer, “What do you do all day?” The farmer replied, “I plough the fields and grow crops. When the time is ripe, I get busy with harvesting.” The soldier said, “That does not seem to be so challenging. Look at me. I go to wars with the king. You should join the army and serve the king.” The farmer said, “How can I go to war? I am not trained to fight. I have always worked on fields growing food crops.” A monk walking by heard the conversation and added, “Soldier, you are doing an amazing job of defending the country. But the farmer’s role is not any less important. What will you eat and nourish your body with, if the farmer doesn’t put in efforts?”

Moral: Every job is valuable.
