The Escape

Once upon a time, a kingdom became so dry that even the King and the Queen had nothing left to eat in the palace. They were forced to send the princess away to seek her fortune. Wandering around, she came to a castle where an old woman in a blue dress and a hat invited her to come and rest. But as soon as princess entered, the old woman locked the door, imprisoning her.
The old woman was a wicked witch and she made the princess work day and night. The unhappy princess slept on straw in the courtyard but couldn’t escape.
One day, the princess heard a voice calling for help from an old well. She lowered herself into it in the bucket, but found it was dry. At the bottom sat a sad-looking toad, who had called for help.
“That old woman is a witch,” said the toad, “She put a spell on me, turning me from a prince into a toad. And she has sucked out all the water from the land, so I can’t get out of this dry well.”
“I too am a prisoner in the castle,” said the princess, “How can I help you?”
“The witch sleeps with a bottle in which she has held the water. It is in a chest near her bed,” explained the toad, “If you are able to get that bottle, we can open it letting out the water.”

The princess tried to get into the witch’s room in a tower, but she locked it always. One night, the princess climbed in through a window into the room. The witch was fast asleep that time.
The princess crept up to the chest and pulled out the bottle. However, as she was tiptoeing out of the room, the creaking door awoke the witch. She ran and caught the princess.
Screaming, she dragged the princess and forced her down into the well in the bucket.
The princess wept till she remembered the bottle in her pocket. “Here is the bottle!” she said, giving it to the toad at once.
“I’m going to open it,” he said, “Be ready to swim because the waters will return!”

As soon as he opened the bottle, a flood was let loose and they were carried right out of the well! The water washed away the witch forever, and spread all over the land, making it green again.
The princess looked at the handsome prince! They went to the palace where the King and the Queen were delighted to see their daughter. She married the prince and they were always happy.
