All the major warriors were dead. Ravana now came into the field for the final battle with Rama. He was undeterred by all the evil omens. The battlefield was terrible, with Ravana, Rama, Lakshmana, Sugreeva, Hanuman and both the armies fighting mercilessly. Sugreeva killed Mahodara and Virupaksha. Kumbha and Nikumbha, sons of Kumbhakarna, died in the battle. When all his warriors had fallen, Ravana faced Rama, who came forward with Vibheeshana by his side. Ravana was in his chariot while Rama stood barefoot on the ground. The gods saw the unequal situation and Indra sent his chariot driven by Matali for Sri Rama. Rama and Ravana engaged in a furious combat. Ravana’s weak spot lay in his navel. Rama shot the brahmastra at Ravana, and for the first time in his life, the name ‘Rama’ was on his lips as he died.
