The Days of the Week

The days of the week wanted a holiday so that they might have a party. But they never found time to celebrate together! They were always busy. They finally decided to have a party on February twenty-ninth as the leap year came only once in four years.
They would eat and drink, dance and sing and have a merry time. And each one would come in a fancy dress.
On the day of the party, Sunday, who was the eldest, came dressed as a priest going to church. He laughed at himself. Monday came in the dress of a schoolboy, in a blazer and tie as if ready to go to school.

Tuesday arrived wearing the dress of a warrior. “Tuesday is named after the Viking god of war, Tyr!” he roared, brandishing a sword, looking brave and wild.
Wednesday came in looking very superior as a Prince. He even had a crown on his head. “Look how important I am!” he laughed, “Three days come before me to announce my arrival and three days follow me like my servants!” Everyone had a good laugh.
Thursday also came as a great warrior with a red beard, a metal belt and iron gloves, carrying a mighty red hammer. He thundered, “I am named after the Viking god of thunder, Thor! See how strong and deadly I am!”
Friday was a beautiful young girl who came in wearing a beautiful gown. Her golden brown hair made her look gorgeous. She had a pearl necklace made by dwarfs. She was named after Freya, the Viking goddess of love.

Saturday, who was an older woman, arrived last, dressed as a housewife, wearing an apron too! Everyone laughed to see her carrying a broom and a bag of knitting. “Well,” she smiled and said, “Someone has to look after the others, so here are some sandwiches!”
That was the beginning of the party! And the days of the week really enjoyed themselves that day.
