The Day of Silence

Reggie was born deaf. But he was so nice and kind that everyone in the town liked and loved him. Sadly, people treated him differently from others. The adults thought that he was not capable of understanding them while the children were concerned about hurting his sentiments. Reggie did not like this. His friend, Michael, also disliked the fact that everyone treated him differently. He decided that one day the things had to change.
Michael’s father was the Mayor of the town. He went to his father and said, “We should dedicate one day as the festival for deaf people. Let’s celebrate this in honour of Reggie.” During that day, everyone in the town would have to wear earplugs. As everyone loved Reggie, they agreed to the idea. The day was called ‘The Day of Silence’ and on that day, everyone wore earplugs in his ears and had a lot of fun.

Finally, the day came and there was excitement all around. In the morning, everyone enjoyed and laughed together. But, as the day passed, people realised that how difficult life becomes when one cannot hear anything. Above all, they got to know that Reggie was incredible. That day, no one thought of Reggie as a deaf boy. People treated him like all the other children. Reggie’s new side came in front of everyone.
Reggie had a bright and sharp mind. He was the only one who could communicate with everyone with his usual gestures. Everyone paid more attention to what he said and they were shocked by his intelligence. He could find a solution to any problem. He was sharp-witted. He came up to the expectation of one and all. Everyone realised that everyone needs a chance to show his real worth.
