The Crossing

Once, a traveller reached a river on hi journey. He thought, ‘In order to continue with my journey, I have to somehow cross this river.’ However, there was neither a bridge nor a boat to cross it. The traveller had an idea and built a raft with grass and twigs. He used the raft to cross the river. When he reached the other side, he realised how useful the raft had been. He thought, ‘I am glad I crossed the river. This raft has been very useful to me. Should I carry it along for the rest of my journey lest I should need it again?’ As the man sat pondering, a monk appeared and read his mind. He advised, “Do not carry any baggage on your onward journey. Leave the raft behind for other needy travellers to benefit from it.” The traveller agreed and went his way.
