The Covão dos Conchos

Hidden away on the tiny island of Flores off the west coast of Spain, this unbelievable system was built in 1955. The Covão dos Conchos, a giant mystical water hole 1519 metres long, spanning 15 ft with a staggering drop of almost 5,000 ft to the bottom, belongs to a hydroelectric dam. Though the water appears to fall into the centre of the earth yet the gaping tunnel actually leads to Lagoa Comprida. The tunnel was built to ensure the water diversion from Ribeira das Naves to Lagoa Comprida. Over the last 60 years moss and foliage has grown onto the mouth of the funnel.
