The Cat Ritual

Long ago, there lived a Bodhisattva. One day, he and his disciples were practising their evening meditation. Suddenly, a cat that lived in the monastery started making a lot of noise and distracting them. The Bodhisattva then ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening meditation. Thus, every evening, the students tied up the cat. Years later, the Bodhisattva died. However, his students continued to tie up the cat during the meditation session. Eventually, the cat also died. The naive students brought another cat to the monastery and tied it up during meditation. This became a daily ritual in that monastery and several others. Centuries later, the learned scholars, who were the descendants of the Bodhisattva, wrote religious essays on the importance of tying up a cat before meditation.

Moral: Sometimes we continue to follow traditions even if there is no logic in them.
