The Body and Video Games (Brilliant Biology Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Blood pressure monitor
  2. Pen and paper
  3. Toothpicks
  4. Action video game and console
  5. Stopwatch
  6. Ball
  7. TV

The next time your parents tell you to stop playing video games and study, tell them that is exactly what you are doing!

INSTRUCTIONS

                1. The video game you select should be action-packed.

                2. Note down your friend’s ages, gender and previous experience in video games.

                3. Ask an adult to record their breathing level, blood pressure level and pulse rate.

                4. Record their reaction time. Throw a ball at them. See how quickly they catch it.

                5. Test their level of sensitivity by poking each of them in the arm with a toothpick.

                6. Make them play a high action game for 10 minutes.

                7. After 10 minutes, make them stop and record their pulse rates, blood pressure, breathing rates and level of sensitivity.

                8. Make them play for another 5 minutes. Pause the game and once again record all the data.

                9. Repeat for another 5 minutes. While they play, record their level of sensitivity by poking each of them 20 times in the arm gently.

                10. Pause the game; how many times did each friend feel the prick? Note their reaction time as well.

RESULT

Video games work on our nervous system making our heart rate, breathing and pulse rate faster, and sensitivity level lesser. It improves our reaction time by creating a rush of adrenaline.
