It is a popular annual flower whose flowering time ranges from late spring to summer. The flowers grow in a cluster of 5 to 15 on stems arising from the leaf axils. They are pea-shaped and erect with two broad upper petals, forming a semi-circle over the lower petals. The leaves are compound with a single pair of leaflets on a winged stalk and a branched tendril between them. Its fruit is a somewhat flattened pea pod. Sweet peas are poisonous when eatenespecially the flowers and the seeds.
