Interesting fact : Due to a unique pattern on the underside of its hind wings, which resemble a ‘?’ this butterfly is popularly known as the ‘Question mark butterfly’.
With a wingspan of 4.5-7.5 cm, the question mark butterfly has a beautiful colouring, with an underside that resembles a dried leaf. Females lay eggs on the underside of leaves, which are not the host plants. Its diet as larva is comprised of red elm, Japanese hop, nettles, American elm, hackberry and false nettle plants. As an adult, it feeds on nectar, tree sap, rotting fruit, dung and carrion.
