Plants Breathe (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

3-4 zip lock plastic bags
A sunny day
Different types of small plants.

We all know how to identify the action of
breathing in humans and even animals. But
how can you be sure that plants breathe? Find out for sure.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly, remember that you are not supposed to tear any leaf or break a plant for this experiment. Also, you must perform this experiment on a sunny day.
  2. Walk around your garden and look for a variety of small plants. They should have branches or leaves small enough to put a plastic bag over them.
  3. Once you have identified your plants, take the zip
lock bags and one at a time place the
zip lock bags over the different plants
and pull the zip locks shut as far as
    possible.
  4. Obviously with the plant still attached to the
ground you are not going to be able to shut
the bags completely, but pull the zip locks
shut as far as possible so that no air is able
    to get inside the bags.
  5. Leave the plants like this for 30
    minutes to an hour.
  6. Come back and note down your
    observations.

RESULT

Tiny droplets will have formed inside the plastic bags, depending on how well you were able to shut them. These tiny droplets are condensed water which forms on the inside of the bags, proving that plants also have a respiration process. You could also try this experiment on plants in winter.
