It produces slender trumpet-shaped red flowers. The red flowers are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. The leaves and the flowers of pineapple sage are edible. The flowers may be used as a garnish, or may be added to fruit cocktails or salads. The leaves may be added to salads or to hot/iced teas. The plant is extensively used for the treatment of anxiety, and also for lowering blood pressure.
