Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa was born in 1532 in Galicia, Spain, and he died in 1592 (aged 60 years) Lisbon, Portugal. A Spanish explorer, author, historian, mathematician, astronomer and scientist, Pedro Sarmiento started by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean to Mexico. He lived there for two years before moving on to Peru where he lived for two decades. He wrote a very detailed account of the Inca history and mythology. Pedro joined Alvaro de Mendana in looking for Australia but instead discovered the Solomon Islands.
Do you know: Alvaro threw away Pedro’s journals and maps and abandoned him in Mexico to take credit for the discovery but after a trial Pedro was given his due credit.
