Mrs Dolittle’s Magic

Mrs Bundle was known in the village for keeping a very neat cottage. She was a small, round cheerful person and her house was always sparkling clean. Everyone wondered how she managed to keep everything so well.
One day when Alice was going past Mrs Bundle’s cottage, she heard a terrible noise. She ran to the cottage and knocked. The door was opened by Mrs Bundle. But she did not look at all like her usual self.
Her clothes were dirty and her hair stood on end; there were stains on her dress and on her face. And behind her, the house was in a complete mess! Alice was shocked!
“Mrs Bundle, what happened?” she exclaimed.
Mrs Bundle burst into tears. “Those terrible garden elves! They were not allowed to come into the house. They have crept inside and created havoc! Look at this!” she said, as she showed Alice the mess inside her cottage.

The sofas had footprints all over. The curtains had broken loose. The table cloth lay in a heap with a lot of broken cups and plates all over it. All the food lay scattered around the kitchen with broken jars and bottles spilling their contents. Even the garbage can was lying on its side with peels and wrappers spilling out!
Alice ran out and brought Mrs Dolittle, who was a very helpful witch.
Mrs Dolittle was a little person with bright eyes and a smile that stretched right across her face! And she wore a pink dress with little daisies on it. No one could imagine that she was a witch at all. Taking charge immediately, she asked, “Where is your broom, my dear?”
Mrs Bundle gave her the broom and the dustpan. “Now, while I get the sweeping done, you must dust the house.”
First Mrs Dolittle held the broom and whispered a spell on it. It whirled out of her hand and swept into all the corners where the elves were hiding. They were swept out into the garden, yelling and protesting. “You come back and I’ll put a spell on you,” she threatened them.

Next, the broom swept the house clean. Mrs Bundle stitched up the curtains. Mrs Dolittle found a sponge that magically cleaned all the stains.
Within minutes Mrs Bundle’s cottage looked as good as new. Alice made tea and they all sat down as Mrs Bundle thanked Mrs Dolittle and Alice for all their help. The elves would never dare to come in again!
